GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT: 2022 $100k Grantee Preparing to Build the Impact100 SJ Wing

Beyond The Check, Grants
Impact100 South Jersey’s 2022 Core Mission grantee, Boys & Girls Clubs of Cumberland County (BGCCC), has had a busy year since our 2022 Annual Meeting. In addition to rebuilding their post-pandemic, in-person youth enrollment, they have been working with their local government to secure permits and an architect to design an addition to the youth center that our $100,000 grant funded. The addition, to be called the Impact100SJ wing, will substantially expand the size of the Club's current Youth for Change Center, enabling them to serve a greater number of local children and teens. The Club’s main building in Vineland, which was previously a credit union, has limited square footage and has proved challenging to serve young people of various ages. The expansion will help the Club build capacity by…

Alice Paul: In Pursuit of Ordinary Equality Written by Impact100 Member Ginny DeLong On May 6th, the Non-Profit Outreach Committee welcomed 20 Impact100 SJ members to Paulsdale, the ancestral home of women’s suffrage leader Alice Paul and now the headquarters of the Alice Paul Institute (API). The organization was the 2020 recipient of a $43,000 general operating grant that was used to help expand the national reach of its girl’s leadership programs by enhancing their digital presence.  During the brief lecture and slide presentation by volunteer Mary Kimport, Impact members learned about the life and work of Alice Paul, the history of what was once a 175-acre farm, and the incredible struggle to win the right to vote for women. About Paulsdale and API Paulsdale is a National Historic Landmark in Mount Laurel.…

Grantee Spotlight: Family Promise of Southwest NJ

Grants
When families become homeless, they are often forced to leave the school district their children are attending.  In 2020, Family Promise of Southwest New Jersey submitted an Impact100 South Jersey application for funding that would allow them to grow a pilot student transportation program that would send homeless children to their original sending districts. They were also looking to turn this program into an independent source of future revenue. That year they were selected as one of the finalists, and although not selected as the $100,000 Core Mission grantee, they received $43,000 in general operating funding that they put toward purchasing vans. An extra benefit to applying for an Impact100 grant was they now had a robust proposal they could submit to another foundation.  As a result, they received the needed funding.…

BEYOND THE CHECK: Farmers Against Hunger Delivers Despite Challenging Conditions

Beyond The Check, Grants
NJ Agricultural Society's Farmers Against Hunger program (FAH), a 2021 Impact100 South Jersey General Operating Grantee, has been working through a perfect storm of national challenges at the local level. Meeting the needs of struggling farmers, families, and community organizations facing a pandemic, inflation, and drought made their programs even more critical to the region. But they have shown up and flexed to meet the demand. New Jersey farmers faced so many obstacles this year and many were not able to offer the amount of surplus crops that they have in the past. Abnormal climate conditions, such as early spring followed by spring frost that damaged plantings, combined with drought later in the season, made growing conditions extremely challenging. On top of that, inflation, which affected fuel costs for tractors…

Beyond The Check, Grants
How to bring joy to kids?  Bring Alpacas to Ronald McDonald House. YES, Alapacas. Supporting our grantees and their missions can take many forms. Impact100 South Jersey Nonprofit Outreach Committee Co-Chair Sue Levy-Polikoff arranged a visit from Morning Glori Farmette located in Marlton, NJ for the first ever Alpaca visit. Rocky and Party Crasher were a big hit, even though some families were a bit apprehensive in the beginning. During another visit, Sue taught Yoga to parents, staff and some of the kids who are undergoing treatment or post op treatment/therapy at local hospitals." I don't think the parents realized how much they needed this till they noticed their bodies starting to relax which is huge." Levy-Polikoff also created activity packets for the kids that included word search with yoga words…
