Impact100 South Jersey’s 2020 general operating grantee, Alice Paul Institute (API), celebrated its 40th anniversary in January with an open house at the newly renovated Paulsdale. Paulsdale is a National Historic Landmark and the home of local suffragist, feminist and political strategist, Alice Paul.    API honors Alice Paul’s legacy through its commitment to education and leadership development through school programs, Scout programs and the Girls Leadership Council (GLC).  API’s School Group Programming offers assemblies and in class programs to classes K-12, as well as field trips to Paulsdale.  Younger girls and boys are introduced to the concept of civic engagement and creating positive social change through games and art.  Programs for older students focus on the history of suffrage, voting, citizenship, integrity, leadership and social action. Grantee Update: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties

We are excited to share another story of growth and impact powered in part by Impact100 South Jersey members and grants!  Impact100 South Jersey funded the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties (BBBS) Mentor2.0 program through a Core Mission grant of $100,000 in 2019 and a general operating grant of $55,500 in 2023. To date, 100 mentees have participated in the Mentor2.0 program. The program offers a great opportunity to make a big impact on a young life with limited in person hours. Mentor2.0 has a robust software component that provides an efficient way to mentor a high school student as they plan for their future and Zoom options for meetings.   Outcomes for the unique and impactful Mentor2.0 program, where college­ educated, professional mentors connect with high school juniors…

Community Heroes Grant Update As we tread through our first year of the new Community Heroes Grants, we’re pleased to share that we received 39 applications from small nonprofits not currently large enough for our $100,000 Core Mission Grant. The Community Heroes Grant Review Committee, made up of 25 members, is reviewing these grants just completed their training and now the work begins.  The goal is to whittle the field down to 6 organizations that our members will vote on before the Annual Meeting.  We will announce the $10,000 grant recipients that night.  We want to thank members of the Small Grants Committee and the Leadership Council for their work crafting this brand new opportunity to double the number of South Jersey organizations we fund. Grantee Update: Habitat for Humanity of Camden County

2023 grantee Camden County Habitat for Humanity was awarded $55,000 for general operation expenses, which they applied to their Aging in Place program that targets low-income senior homeowners struggling to stay in their homes because of the need for critical home repairs or accessibility modifications. Critical home repairs are those that affect the livability of the home and may include roof repairs, plumbing, heating and cooling, electrical, structural (floors, ceilings, walls) and water infiltration repairs. Impact100SJ liaison Sharon Reel learned that this award recently helped 8 senior citizens with accessibility repairs enabling them to stay in their homes.  Camden County Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity of South-Central New Jersey (Habitat SCNJ) have announced their merger, uniting their resources, expanding their reach, and amplifying their impact from the Delaware…

Some of the young people served at the Michael J. Doyle Field House in South Camden. Our 2023 $100,000 Core Mission grantee, Heart of Camden (HoC), is committed to enhancing the quality of life of the South Camden community through programs for housing restoration, economic expansion, and community development. Impact100 South Jersey’s grant furthered that mission by funding the expansion of programming and services provided by the organization’s Bridge Builders Project at the Michael J. Doyle Fieldhouse. Through education about the City of Camden, the Bridge Builders Project connects critical services provided by outside volunteers and supporters to residents, young people, women, and women with children and families to build a stronger community. The concept of Beyond the Check is a tenant of Trust Based Philanthropy. It is one of the ways Impact100 South Jersey partners with our grantees beyond the funding we provide. Offering grantees the opportunity to connect with our members to recruit volunteers, board members, or support in other forms expands the impact with have in our community. Our October 26th Beyond the Check event at Collingswood Community Center was designed to provide meaningful connections for our members — giving them to chance to become even more involved in making a difference in our region. Part of Impact100 South Jersey's goal is to partner with grantees beyond transformative grant making. Impacting organizations Beyond the Check is an important aspect of Trust Based Philanthropy. To that end, several members participated in 2 of 2023 grantee Habitat for Humanity's work. Habitat Build Three Impact100 SJ members assisted the construction staff of our 2023 grantee Camden County Habitat for Humanity in installing windows in a Camden row home that will be sold to a family to help them achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life.  Michele Susson, Lindsey Cowperthwait, and Valerie Buickerood worked with construction manager Tony Wideman and his assistant Will to weather seal and install windows and to board them up upon completion to ensure they remain intact while other work continues.…

Impact100 South Jersey member Valerie Buickerood (pictured on left) has been a mentor in our grantee Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties Mentor2.0 program since the fall of 2022. The program was funded by the Impact100 SJ core mission grant in 2019 and was fully launched in 2021. Buickerood was matched with a H.S. junior named Luz (pictured on right) to help her identify her goals and map out her post high school journey. Mentors help strengthen college or career aspirations, and build an understanding of college eligibility, the application process, and support systems, or help mentees in their search for programs that align with their career goals. Luz is in her senior year and getting ready to apply to colleges. Buickerood has supported her in drafting…
