Heart of Camden, the Impact100 South Jersey 2023 $100,000 Core Mission grantee, is making progress expanding programs and services provided by their Bridge Builders Project at the Michael J. Doyle (MJD) Fieldhouse. The core of their mission is to Improve the lives of women, children, and families living in low-to-moderate income households in the Waterfront South neighborhood, South Camden, and the City of Camden as a whole.
Critical services provided by the Bridge Builders Project serve as a bridge to connect outside volunteers and supporters, educating them about the city and building stronger connections with the community.
The Bridge Builders Project is on track to complete their proposed goals by the end of this calendar year. Year one activities included a youth circus camp for one week in July, youth basketball for 6 months, and a year round open gym. Services for families included year-round, 3 times a week food distribution to an average of 100 participants, diapers & sanitary pad give away averaging 200 a week, and 2 large clothing giveaways with about 400 participating.
Activities enjoyed in the community included holiday celebrations of Halloween, Easter, and Thanksgiving for about 400 participants. In addition, 100 people participated in 6 classes of group fitness & Yoga, and 15 were involved in the summer monthly Garden Club.
Through the first year, one paid position was added, and three retained along with 2 volunteers added as staff. Involving residents to lead, organize and promote these activities has been an important part of their success.
It is anticipated Heart of Camden will continue offering existing and expanded services at the MJD Fieldhouse associated with the Bridge Builder project until December 31, 2024. Existing programs they intend to sustain during this time include Open Gym and the weekly Food Pantry. New activities made possible are projected to include the 1st annual MJD Fieldhouse Block Party, a Sunset Walk & Movie Night, and a Halloween and/or Community Thanksgiving event.
